Federal – F.E.C. Deadlocks on Regulating Deepfakes
The Federal Election Commission deadlocked 3-3 last week on whether to regulate campaign advertisements featuring images of candidates that have been artificially altered using deepfake technology. Several Commissioners also expressed skepticism that the agency has the authority to regulate them at all, sewing doubt that meaningful restraints on using the technology will be in place for the upcoming 2024 election.
