New Jersey Poised to Revamp Campaign Finance Law

A new campaign finance law, A4372, is working its way through the New Jersey State Legislature and may become law quickly enough to effect the 2023 elections. The proposed changes would double most contribution limits while exempting party organizations from the State’s pay-to-play laws. 501(c)(4)s and PACs would also see their reporting thresholds lowered from $10,000 to $7,500 and would be required to disclose all expenditures instead of just those exceeding $3,000. Donor disclosure requirements would also be lowered from $300 to $200 and contributions of $1,900 or more in the last 11 days of a campaign would have to be reported in 24 instead of 48 hours.
